Regularly Scheduled Events

Tuesday Morning Birders. The Tuesday Morning Birders meets at 8:00 a.m. every Tuesday morning at the Tulsa Garden Center from November through March and at 7:30 a.m. April through October during Daylight Savings Time. Join us! Call Patty Moser, 252-2824.

 

First Saturday of every month. Bird with Oxley Nature Center Staff in Mohawk Park. Meet 8:00 a.m. at parking lot. Call 669-6644 for details.

Second Saturday, March through October. Oxley Nature Center Butterfly Walk, 10:30-12:00. Call 669-6644 for details.

Third Saturday, March through October. Oxley Nature Center Wildflower Walk, 10:00-11:00. Call 669-6644 for details.

Tulsa Audubon meetings. Meeting are held the third Tuesday of each month (except June-August,) are free and open to the public. Meet for snacks and social time at 7:00, program begins at 7:30 p.m.

The September through March meetings will be held at the Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria in Tulsa (click here for a map.)
The April and May 2009 meetings will be held at the Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St. in Tulsa.

September 2008

Sept. 12-13, 8th Annual Oklahoma BioBlitz! is being held this year at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge on Friday, Sept. 12th at 3:00 P.M. through Saturday, Sept. 13th, 2008 at 3:00 P.M. The Oklahoma BioBlitz! is a rapid inventory of biological diversity hosted by the Oklahoma Biological Survey and conducted by volunteers from around the state and the region. As many plants and animals in a designated area of public land that can be identified in 24 consecutive hours are tallied. www.biosurvey.ou.edu/bioblitz.html

. 16, Tue. Society Meeting. 7:30 p.m. "Wildcat Glades Audubon Center in Joplin, MO with Dave Henness. Dave is a volunteer at the new center, which features a “green” building and some of the last remaining chert glades, a globally unique habitat found only in this area.

October 2008

Oct. 3-5, Oklahoma Ornithological Society Fall Meeting. West TCC (Tulsa Community College) campus. See www.okbirds.org for more details.

Oct. 4, Sat. Field Trip - Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Gardens.  Visit the site of the this new facility northwest of downtown Tulsa, still under development and help TAS develop a bird list for the Gardens as we walk the grounds, viewing birds and other wildlife. Oct. 12, Sun. Together Green Event - Sittin’ Green Together, Deep Fork NWR Habitat Improvement & Big Sit. In conjunction with the Friends of the Deep Fork NWR we will be planting native plants, doing trail maintenance and cleaning, and participating in a Big Sit bird count. Participants will receive a Together Green/TAS T-Shirt and supper, provided the the Deep Fork Friends. See the Tulsa Audubon Together Green page for more info.

Oct. 21, Tue. 7:30 p.m
. Society Meeting. "Pontotoc Ridge Preserve and Blue River Conservation District" with Jona Tucker
. Jona is director of this Nature Conservancy preserve and will discuss this premier crosstimbers property, an excellent example of Oklahoma's ruggedly beautiful lands.

 

November 2008

Nov. 15, Sat. Birds & Wine - Grand Lake & Summerside Vineyards.  We will begin the day looking for Pelicans and other birds on Grand Lake, and then visit Summerside Vineyards in Vinita for lunch and a winery tour. . 18, Tue. 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting. Fall Warblers and a Christmas Bird Count Refresher" with Dr. Chris Butler. Dr. Butler, an ornithologist and professor of biology at the University of Central Oklahoma, will help us sharpen our bird identification skills.

Nov. 23, Sun. Afternoon Outing.  A short visit to a local birding area. Meet 3:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Garden Center. Contact John Kennington, 918-809-6325.

 

December 2008

Dec. 6, Sat. Field Trip - "Puddle-jumping" at the Tulsa Lakes: Yahola, Lynn Lane, Skiatook. Meet at the monument at Lake Yahola at 8:00 a.m. Contact Cyndie Browning 918-492-5622 to RSVP and for more information.

Dec. 13, Sat. Together Green Event - Oxley Nature Center Habitat Improvement. Join us to help remove invasive species from Oxley's habitats, and perform other work to improve Oxley's trails and ecosystems. Dec. 16, Tue. 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting - Annual Christmas Show and Tell Party. Attendees are invited to bring stories, slides, artifacts, or digital images (up to about 10) on any subject of general interest (birds, animals, travel, wildflowers, etc.) to share with the group. Members bring treats to share after the meeting.  Please contact Gail Storey, 742-2684 or  about your presentation. Please bring your digital photos on a CD or flash drive.

Dec. 20, Sat. Christmas Bird Count. Tulsa Audubon Society will be participating in the 107th count by the National Audubon Society. For information contact Jo Loyd, 918-835-2946.

 

January 2009

Jan. 3, Sat. Eagle Days. Meet between 8 and 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Watchable Wildlife Area, east of the Corps of Engineers Office on the north side of the Arkansas River at Lake Keystone dam. For information, contact Dave Edwards, 865-7398. This Eagle Day is also part of Tulsa Audubon's Together Green program. Volunteers helping present this event will receive a Together Green/TAS T-Shirt, and hot chocolate and other snacks will be available. See the Tulsa Audubon Together Green page for more info.

. 20, Tue. 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting, The Red-cockaded Woodpecker" with John Skeen. John is a biologist and the manager of the McCurtain County Wilderness Area, the only habitat in Oklahoma for this endangered species.

Jan. 31, Sat. Together Green Event - Oxley Nature Center Bluebird Trail. Join us to help build and install a new Bluebird Trail at Oxley Nature Center. Snacks will be provided, and participants will receive a Together Green/TAS T-Shirt. See the Tulsa Audubon Together Green page for more info.

. 17, Tue. 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting. "Landscaping for Wildlife" with Steve Owens. Steve is owns Bustani Plant Farm and appeared on the Oklahoma Gardening television show. He will discuss making your yard attractive and beneficial to wildlife.

. 17, 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting. “Ecology and Status of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken” with Dr. Dwayne Elmore.
Dwayne is a Biologist with the OSU Extension Service. He will discuss the ecology, habitat needs, and status of this threatened prairie species.

April 2009

Apr. 18-19 Field Trip - Selman Ranch for Lesser Prairie-Chickens. The Selman Ranch is located north of Woodward Oklahoma, and this will be part of the Oklahoma Audubon Council's Lesser Prairie Chicken Festival. A fence marking event, for Prairie Chicken protection, is being organized by TAS as on of our TogetherGreen events.  Contact Jim and Anita Mitchell, 918-272-6755 to RSVP and for more information. Apr. 21, Tue. 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting. Feather Connections in Migratory Birds" with Dr. Jeff Kelly. Dr. Kelly is an assistant professor of zoology at ou and serves with the Oklahoma Biological Survey. He will share his scientific insights into the wonder of migration.

Please note this meeting will be held at the Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St. in Tulsa.

Apr. 25, Sat. Birds & Wine - Washington Irving Memorial Park, Bixby sod farms for Spring migrants and Stonebluff Winery. This is a joint event with the Audubon Society of Central Oklahoma. Meet 8:00 a.m. at Washington Irving. At 9:00 a.m. ASCO will join us there, and we will then bird the sod farms. At noon those wishing to will travel to Stonebluff Cellars for lunch and a winery tour. If you are planning to visit the winery, please contact John Kennington, 918-809-6325 so we can get an accurate headcount.

 

 

May 2009

May 16, Sat. Field Trip - Nickel Preserve for spring migrants and early summer nesters. The Nickel Preserve is located about 10 miles north of Tahlequah. Bring plenty of water and snacks.  For more info, contact Martin Brown, 446-8667.

May 19, 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting - Bird Photography in the Digital Age" with Bill Horn. Bill has over 30 years experience in wildlife photography. . He will share some of his beautiful images and tips on getting those great shots. See his web site at www.birdsofoklahoma.net.
